Salma Hayek In May’s Marie Claire
Salma Hayek Contributes More Than 2 Cents In May’s Marie Claire
Salma Hayek spoke out Marie Claire’s May issue about expecting her first child at age 40 – and she believes that women should not feel rushed to have children until they feel ready.
Motherhood is not for everyone. It is for me, but there’s no reason women should feel rushed to have a child. Society thinks if you don’t have children, you’ve failed as a woman, even if you are CEO of a company. You’ve got to be beautiful, smart, skinny, tall, rich, successful at your job, married to the right guy – and have genius children. And by the way, you also have to be a nun!
On top of enjoying motherhood this year, she is also the executive producer of one of the year’s biggest hits, ABC’s Ugly Betty. In showbiz, persistance is key.
Everybody thinks I’ve got a new job, but I’ve been trying to get shows on the air for years. The secret is never giving up.
The demands to maintain a perfect physical appearance in the industry are intense, but she is determined to challenge people’s ideas about women – especially Latin women.
The stress [of appearing physically perfect] is sensational. But then, you have to keep everything in perspective. It’s a dress, hair, makeup – c’mon, let’s go! We have to stop this obsession that starts when we’re teenagers: ‘Am I pretty enough?’ I started out in Hollywood at the same time as Jennifer Lopez. Before us, Latinas only had roles that were part of the backdrop, as the maid or the prostitute. We changed that. Of course, you’re always looking for those Meryl Streep parts, but I am grateful for the things I did.

Orlando Bloom In Details Magazine
Orlando Bloom - sexy, sexy Orlando Bloom. Here he is on the cover of Details magazine.
* On his filming two trilogies back-to-back: “I’ve been white-knuckling it for so long. Between the first Lord of the Rings and this [Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End], I’ve been going nonstop. I would come off one movie and straightaway start the next picture. I wasn’t even really thinking about it, I was letting the machinery sort of run me. So now, on a personal level, I just want some time and space from everything, from all that; from the environment and the phone and the communication.”
* On turning 30 in January and for the first time in a decade having nothing to do: “Look, it all felt important, too important, but now I’m in a position to—look, I’m trying not to take myself so seriously, and in not taking myself so seriously, I think I’ll be more serious.”
* On learning at 13 that his dad was not his biological father: “Think about that. Think about finding out when you’re 13 that your dad is not your dad. It’s like, okay, take it on the chin and keep going. No choice, really.”
* On being told by doctors at 21 that he might never walk again: “For four days I was thinking this was it, that I would be living my life in a wheelchair, and then I thought, no, and I knew I would walk. I just knew.”
* On being famous: “There’s all this noise that happens. I was 22 when I got The Lord of the Rings. Nobody tells you what it is like to be famous—there’s no guidebook, you know what I mean?”
* On the Crusades epic Kingdom of Heaven: “When you’re [almost] 27 years old and Fox greenlights a movie with a budget of $150 million with you as the headliner, that’s a tribute. And then all the press afterward was like I hadn’t come through on something, sort of like I hadn’t delivered. But what did I not come through on?”
* On his career: “I have the patience to trust my own journey. Life is going to unfold as it should because life always does. If I’m true to myself, then all the rest is like, f&^% it, man.”

Salma Hayek Revealed Her Struggle To Marie Claire
Recently engaged mommy-to-be Salma Hayek spoke to Marie Claire Magazine about her struggles as a Latina actress in Hollywood, and the unfair pressures women face to have children.
“Motherhood is not for everyone—it is for me…but society thinks if you don’t have children, you’ve failed as a woman,” 40-year-old Hayek told the magazine. “You’ve got to be beautiful, smart, skinny, tall, rich, successful at your job, married to the right guy—and have genius children.
Marie Claire hits newsstands on April 17. Here’s a quick glance at the rest of Salma’s thoughtful interview:
On being typecast in certain roles because she’s Mexican:
I started out in Hollywood at the same time as Jennifer Lopez. Before us, Latinas only had roles that were part of the backdrop, as the maid or prostitute. We changed that.
On issues with her appearance:
Especially when I have to appear in public, and there are cameras…the stress is sensational. Sometimes I don’t like the dress—the way it fits, the way I look. And there are a million people looking at me, telling me to smile, but I don’t feel like smiling. But then I have to keep everything in perspective.

Gwen Stefani Brings Her Sexy Back For Harper's Bazaar
Gwen Stefani is back to her fabulous figure just in time for a Harper’s Bazaar fashion photo shoot.
Gwen on her bosy-pregnancy body: “Your metabolism is like, whooosh! You’re sleep deprived, but you have this crazy amount of energy because of all those hormones. I’m scared what’ll happen when it all stops. What it’ll feel like, going back to the regular me. Now I’m in a repeater zone. I just want to make babies and make records.”
Gwen on her ‘My Fair Lady’-inspired spread: “I’ve gotten a little more feminine over the last few years. As the years go by, you get more comfortable with looking more like a woman.”
Gwen on struggling to maintain her size 4 figure: “I hate talking about it, but it’s true. I’ve always been on a diet, ever since I was in the sixth grade. It’s an ongoing battle and it’s a nightmare. But I like clothes too much, and I always wanted to wear the outfits I would make. And I’m very vain.”
